Full-scale emergency response exercise to take place on Coral Gables Campus

The Office of Emergency Management, in collaboration with University of Miami Police and Coral Gables Police and Fire departments, will conduct two days of drills and exercises on Tuesday, May 21, and Wednesday, May 22.

Most activity occurring during the full-scale exercise will take place within the vacated Stanford Residential College.

The University of Miami Office of Emergency Management will lead a full-scale emergency response training exercise in collaboration with the University of Miami Police Department, City of Coral Gables Police and Fire departments, Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue, City of Miami Fire Rescue, Pinecrest Police Department, South Miami Police Department, City of West Miami Police Department, and other University departments on Wednesday, May 22.

The full-scale exercise on Wednesday will run from 7 to 11 a.m. on the west side of campus, with most activity occurring within the vacated Stanford Residential College. Additional exercise activities will occur later in the morning at the Simulation Hospital Advancing Research and Education facility in the School of Nursing and Health Studies.  

Training drills for first responders will occur on Tuesday, May 21, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“This exercise is designed to help law enforcement, emergency management, and leadership at the University of Miami—as well as first responders with the City of Coral Gables and our neighboring municipalities—better prepare in the event of an emergency, so that we can continue to keep our campus and community safe,” said Matthew Shpiner, executive director of emergency management.

Anyone on the Coral Gables Campus on Tuesday, May 21, should expect to see uniformed police and fire personnel participating in training drills. On Wednesday, first responders, emergency vehicles, and role players acting as victims will be visible near Stanford Residential College, the Knight Center for Music Innovation, and the School of Nursing and Health Studies. Some University roadways and pedestrian pathways in the adjacent area may be closed intermittently during the exercise.

Dates and Times:

Tuesday, May 21, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Wednesday, May 22, from 7 to 11 a.m.

Details:

  • Stanford Residential College, Hecht-Stanford Dining Hall, and perimeter will be closed and inaccessible.
  • No one is permitted in the Stanford Residential College complex during this time.
  • Traffic on University streets surrounding the training area may also be impacted at the time. There will be signage clearly indicating an exercise is in progress.
  • Rescue vehicles will move from Stanford Residential College to the Simulation Hospital Advancing Research and Education facility at the School of Nursing and Health Studies, where the emergency response training exercise will continue.
  • Simulated gun fire may be heard if you are in the immediate area surrounding the exercise.

What you might see:

  • University of Miami Police and Coral Gables, Pinecrest, West Miami, and South Miami Police Department vehicles
  • City of Coral Gables, City of Miami, and Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue vehicles
  • Ambulances
  • Uniformed police officers
  • Uniformed fire personnel
  • Role players, with special effects makeup to look like injuries, acting as victims extricated from Stanford Residential College, with some taken via rescue vehicle to the School of Nursing and Health Studies.
  • Areas surrounding Stanford Residential College taped off with police caution tape.

What you might hear:

  • Simulated gun fire may be heard if you are in the immediate area surrounding the exercise.
  • Role players acting out role of victims.
  • Police and fire personnel vocalizing commands.
  • Exercise participants at the School of Nursing and Health Studies providing emergency medical response at the Simulation Hospital Advancing Research and Education facility.
